Finally, Kate and Jon are gone and we can get down to some serious reality TV and enjoy watching the trials and tribulations of some true American competitors, BBQ Pitmasters! TLC will feature this new series and we are proud to find out early that at least one of our featured Pitmasters, Mike Mills will be featured on the show. Here is a brief Synopsis:

Eight one-hour episodes of BBQ PITMASTERS have been ordered, and is scheduled to premiere December 3 on TLC. The series is produced by Original Media.

BBQ PITMASTERS transports viewers to this competitive cooking subculture, where an estimated 10 million people visit each year to get up-close and personal with the leading chefs of America’s burgeoning barbecue circuit. Like an all-star poker tournament or a championship car race, it is at these events that reputations and respect are gained and lost. For pit masters, the honor rides on the virtues of one perfectly charred rib, and hundreds of thousands of dollars trade hands after a single, mouth-watering bite of brisket.

Finally they recognize that BBQ is not just a hobby, but a competitive sport. We cannot wait to see this and encourage you to check out BBQ Pro Shop where you can grill like a pro and use the rubs and sauces perfected and sold by the pitmasters featured on this show.

Everything you need to cook Thanksgiving Turkey

Everything you need to cook Thanksgiving Turkey

How will you cook your Thanksgiving Turkey this year? Is the plan to just pop it in the oven and go, or are you looking for something a little more out of the ordinary? If you are cooking it in the oven the GrillFriends Turkey Lifter is no longer sold seperately as it has been discontinued so your best bet is to make the investment in the GrillFriends Turkey 101 kit which includes a GrillFriends Glow in the Dark Thermometer, Super Silicone Angled Basting Brush, and the hard to find Turkey Lifter. The kit also includes a bonus Comprehensive Turkey Guide, written by Elizabeth Karmel on How to Cook a Turkey in the oven or on the grill.

Every year Gretchen and I cook ours on the grill and we do one on the gas grill using a GrillFriends Turkey Sitter and another on the Weber Kettle in a roasting rack where we cook it on the coals smoking it with Oak for a unique taste.  It is also critical to brine a Turkey, whether it is on the grill or in the oven as it makes the Turkey tender and is sure to please your guests every time. We did a You Tube video on How to Barbecue a Turkey which is a quick overview but really helpful.

Gary Shoots For Travel at Blackhawks Game

Gary Shoots For Travel at Blackhawks Game

It was a lifelong dream for Gary Belmonti, a life long Chicago Blackhawks fan who had been attending games since he was a small boy to step out onto the ice in front of a sold out United Center crowd and participate in the United Shoot For Travel game. The winner walks away with a free roundtrip ticket, anywhere that United Airlines flies in the US.
Gary would be getting married in December and so for his Bachelor Party he chose to attend a game with all his buddies, and they signed him up to shoot for travel. Tonight was his night and soon he would be on the ice, getting booed because he was the man who would shoot for travel, not the beautiful thin six foot tall model type, but Gary came to shoot that night and shoot he did.
His first shot made the WGN coverage highlight reel, banging ever so slightly off the inside of the board that blocks the large goal mouth and reduces it to a small six inch opening. Shooting from center ice, he just missed and the WGN Announcers thought it was a great shot! His next shot, from between the red and blue lines went wide, so wide that the packed house erupted into a wail of boos.
So again, they moved him and the other contestants up to the blue line, he lined up, and it went right in! The crowd went crazy, and Gary, his moment had come, raised his stick and did a fist pump to the crowd, a Blackhawks tradition that he got to participate in. Gary’s shot benefited the Hawks Charity association and his shot was praised by many, including the 67 year season ticket holder “Coach” who wondered why in all of his years, he had not made it to the ice.

Meet Plowboys BBQ -- The American Royal Invitational Grand ChampionOur good friends over at Plowboy have a new trophy to add to their collection, the won the The 2009 American Royal Invitational Grand Champion in Kansas City and we loved their quote in an article that we link to aboveOther than

Plowboys BBQ Rubs, the key to good barbecue is passion,” Johns says. “You can’t shortcut things too much. Good barbecue doesn’t come from a cookbook. Barbecue is a quest. You learn something from every cook. We learned a couple of new things at the American Royal that will be incorporated in our future cookouts. Like anything, greatness comes from the amount of passion and dedication you have — along with a willingness to accept your own failures, or in our case, willingness to eat them.”

We have been supporting Plowboys for over a year, selling their Yardbird Rub and Bovine Bold Rub at the BBQ Pro Shop and in honor of this prestigious win and for their dedication to the love and the passion of BBQ, we are offering a special sale price all the way up to Black Friday, enjoy!

Big thank you to Blog B-Q for the article, picture and the quote.

Red Sky Grilling's Grilled Pizza Stone

Red Sky Grilling's Grilled Pizza Stone

BBQ Pro Shop has always been a big believer in grilling pizza and are proud to now carry the Grilled Pizza Stone! Red Sky Grilling’s Grilled Pizza Stone is specifically designed for a 22 ½” Weber kettle grill and the Grilled Pizza Stone works great on gas grills too. The Grilled Pizza Stone’s unique shape and material is what hooked us. We had not seen anything like it and what makes us the happiest is the “D” shape design that allows you to get airflow in around the pizza when using a Weber Kettle, Primo Jr or even in a gas grill.

Red Sky Grilling’s Grilled Pizza Stone  is designed to perform without cracking at temperatures approaching 2300°F. The Grilled Pizza Stone is thicker than conventional pizza stones; it is made from an exclusive and unique heat resistant compound. Just like an old-world clay or brick oven, the Grilled Pizza Stone’s material draws moisture from your pizza’s dough as it cooks, resulting in a crispy, crunchy crust, cheese that gets bubbling hot, and your toppings are heated through.

The design also takes the smoke into account and when used in conjunction with a hinged grill grate, adding a wood chunk to your grill is a breeze. By introducing smoldering wood into the cooking process you get a subtle, yet distinct old-world style pizza oven taste. The technique to grill great pizza couldn’t be simpler. Stay tuned for a future blog post about the experience we are going to creat using the stone on our Primo XL. We are excited about the possibility of using it on half the grill so we can tend the smoke and coals with the other half!
