This legendary recipe from Dark Side of the Grill, Big Green Egg fan Mel Chmilar Jr. (aka @darksideofthegrill) takes the classic chili dog and transforms it into something that your friends will begging for this recipe. We bring you the Sloppy Mel Dog—a hot dog (We suggest Vienna Beef or smokie, or kielbasa) smothered in rich, tangy, flavor-packed Sloppy Mel topping. This isn't your average sloppy sandwich—it’s next-level, mouthwatering madness that cranks the flavor up and brings the napkins out in bunches.
Ingredients For the Sloppy Mel Topping:
2 pounds ground beef
2 celery ribs, chopped
1 small green pepper, finely chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1 can (10 ¾ ounces) condensed tomato soup (undiluted)
¼ cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 tablespoon prepared mustard
3 tablespoons Bear and Burtons W Sauce
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon of your favorite BBQ rub
For the Dogs:
Brioche hot dog buns, toasted to perfection Large all-beef hot dogs, Polish smokies, or sliced kielbasa
LET'S COOK
Prepare the Sloppy Mel Topping:
- In a pot, brown the ground beef with celery, green pepper, and onion until cooked through.
- Drain any excess grease. Stir in tomato soup, brown sugar, cider vinegar, mustard, W Sauce, black pepper, and BBQ rub.
- Let it simmer until thick and flavorful.
Grill the Dogs:
- Grill your choice of beef hot dogs, smokies, or kielbasa until perfectly charred.
- Wrap them in foil to keep warm.
- Toast the Buns: Toast the brioche buns until golden and crispy.
- Place them on a platter and get ready to assemble!
Assemble the Sloppy Mel Dogs:
- Place your grilled dog into the toasted bun.
- Using a ladle, pour a generous helping of the Sloppy Mel topping over the dog and bun. Don’t hold back—the messier, the better!
Pro Tip: After topping your dog with Sloppy Mel, sprinkle some shredded cheese on top and pop it back into the smoker (or grill) for a minute to get that melted, cheesy goodness.
